CHITOSAN FERTILIZER

Chitosan Fertilizer is the compilation of what each product can do to protect and stimulate growth of your plants. Recently I visits an orchard farm in Chantaburi, Thailand whereby the farmers are very happy this harvesting season due to the new technology of using the 'Chitosan Base Fertilizer' in his farm. The executives from PP Fertilizer Co Ltd able to explain the technonolgy of using chitosan fertilizer for Dokong (Lansium domesticum), Durian (Durio zibethinus) and Mangoesteen (Garcinia mangostana) tree. Chitosan is a polysaccharide extracted from the shell of crab or shrimp. It is known to be biocompatible, biodegradable and nontoxic. The scientific benefits of Chitosan have even been recognized in 1992. It improves seed germination, root development and disease resistance. Chitosan Fertilizer is a natural antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal agent, tested and approved by US. EPA for use in agriculture & horticulture. This article explain information about the benefits of chitosan fertilizer.

Oligosaccharides that cause hormonal effect on plant. Some of these responses include stem elongation, stimulation of ethylene production and antagonizing auxine, but the they are best known for elicitation of various defensive action. From my observation between two plot of Dokong tree in the farm I visited with chitosan fertilizer and control plot are showing significant effect. The plot which were treated with chitosan fertiliaer showing healthy dark green leaf, shiny and no infection of any disease compare to the control plots with light greea leaf, pale and attacked with Cercospora spp. The stems of treated tree were healthy with few layer of bark and easily peeled compare to control plot with smooth skin and less fruit stalk.  The fruits of treated tree are sweet, larger size, strong yellow skin color, more numbers of fruit (average 15 fruit/stalk) compare to control tree with less sweet taste, smaller fruit size, light green and less fruit number per stalk (8 fruit/stalk).

According to the company representative, It has been found that when fungus attacks a plant it will reduce the vigurousity of the planta. They said that a compound known as 'beta glucanase' will be bio synthesized by the plant cell wall. This substance then proceeds to degrade the fungal cell wall, fragments from which amplify the effect. Some of fragments are beta glucans, another oligosacchrin, which began the production of the phytoalexins, lead to lignine synthesis and promote ethylene foremation. Lignine production strengthens the cell walls. The effect of this fertilizer are significant for the food crop to produce more yield with better quality and safe for human consumption.  This fertilizer are considered as Organic Fertilizer and use sea mollusk such as crab (red crab is claimed as the best source of chitin), Shrimps, Seaweed and many others.

Chitosan Fertilizer functions as it can start, regulate and directly effect the opening and closing of certain gens and regulate process of plant growth. Oligosaccharin can reduce and eliminate the encroachment of pathogenic agent especially against fungal infection, which are difficult to control. Product has no poison, no residue is left over and fit for organic farming and nonpolluting. Chitosan oligosaccharin can activate plant and induce plant to produce antiviral substance. I hope more farmers in Malaysia able to know, understand and apply the advantage of Chitosan Fertilizer especially on tropical fruit tree and vegetables. The price of Chitosan Fertilizer in Malaysia considered 'more expensive' compare those produced and sold in neighboring countries. I hope those chitosan ferlitizer company able to promote this product to our farmers. Thanks.
